LNER BG's - Gresley & Thompson
Can anyone shed any light on when the last LNER BG's left revenue service please?
In know the RCTS book from 1978 shows none left and that the 1976 one shows some Thompson's and Gresley's still in use - both steel and wooden ones. I would imagine then the last went in 1977, however there in is the question.
What was left last? Are the any accurate withdrawal dates, coach numbers etc?
I have found an image of a steel panelled D.245 in use in the summer of 1977 but that is all.
Any clues fellow humans?

Re: LNER BG's - Gresley & Thompson
Sirs,
In the DME a clerk in the records section submitted works orders to the C&W re disposal of stock. I can only speak for the DME in Irving House at Newcastle upon Tyne and that was in 74/75 time when I was loaned to them. I presume these works orders will have been stored??? but I retired in 84 so am out of touch with who is where and who does what. I regret I cleared up a six month back log in a week as the clerk had no idea what type of vehicle was what. One BG that had gone round and round was a GWR BG, there wasn't anything the matter with it -just-not wanted, but stock got condemned just for the sake of needing a new vacuum hose coupling-just the rubber bit!

I'll consult a colleague who may be able to dig out the answers from Chris Bishop's stuff and get back to you, that's if I'm not beaten to it...

Re: LNER BG's - Gresley & Thompson
First pass through Bishop (from the RCH record cards) gives 70621 condemned 12/1977 as the last LNER design BG in revenue service, with several others condemned during 1977 (no month given for any of them), of which 70754 above was one. More detail to follow, hopefully...

My man (and Bishop) come up trumps:
E70621E Dia. 327, York 1945, Deal panelling - cond. 12/1977, later preserved (see Vintage Carriage Trust survey entry http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org ... p?Ref=1038 or M&GN site http://www.mandgn.co.uk/carriages_mainline_70621.htm which have pictures.)
E70635E Dia. 327, York 1946, Deal panelling, cond. circa 5/1977.
E70513E Dia. 315/245, York 1941, Steel panelling, cond. circa 1/1977.
E70754/5E Dia. 245, York 1943 Pigeon - teak panelling, cond. ?/1977. E70754E later preserved (see http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org ... p?Ref=1046 and http://www.departmentals.com).
E70741E Dia. 260, York 1943, Steel panelling, cond. 11/1977. Was preserved but now broken up (see http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org ... sp?Ref=929.)
E105E and E106E Dia. 344, York 1948, Steel panelling, cond. ?/1977.
This does not taken into account transfer to Departmentals, although scrapping dates appear to be covered in http://www.departmentals.com.
Edit: a contributor on another forum has provided this link to a photo of E70513E, dated March 1977, a couple of months after the alleged official month of condemnation and without the usual COND X in a circle. BTW its worth looking at the next photo too...

Only if you're paying - which might prove more than a wee challenge for an 'East-coaster'.IAK wrote:May you showered with pints of beer and jaffa cakes.
