Hoping somebody can help..... :)
Does anybody know if any GCR brake vans have survived that I can go and see, or failing that know the location of any decent pictures of one on the net? Sofar all attemps to find any info about them on the net have failed miserably!
Thanks
Jim

I have just joined the Forum and this is my first posting. Not too late I hope.
There exists - or existed about 1998 - a GCR 15T 6 wheel brake van on the West Somerset Railway. It was in good condition and recently painted in bauxite with N E and number 509950 on the sides. One obvious change is that all the outer woodwork has been replaced with vertical planks - the originals of course were horizontal.
Apart from the vertical planking the whole vehicle appears to be in original condition - down to the split spoke wheels. Inside the van the planking is horizontal as originally built. The whole of the underframe components appear to be present. It has vac pipes at the ends but not sure if still fully vac fitted.
My friend spoke to someone from the WSR about the van and the impression is that it was sold out of service for industrial use and the new owners looked after it.

Here's the Vintage Carriage Trust entry:

They've got it down as a CLC brake van which explains why a GCR search wouldn't retrieve it.

Hmmm, it's not quite just a matter of a change to vertical planking of the body is it? The four-window outer ends with lamp access doors, and two-small-window-only inner ends are no more, the inner and outer ends having been thoroughly "LNER Toad" standardised. Little surprise that some people have great difficulty in recognising the vehicle for what it originally was.

Thanks for finding that! Is it me, or is the E painted a bit lower than the N?
