Was the Flying Scotsman ever painted in lined black/plain black?

I'm probably mis-remembering it, but I vaguely remember Waterman in an interview claiming he received hate mail from vicars when he suggested he should run it in WW2 black!

Re: Flying Scotsman
Re FS's number in black. 4472 from 4/43 to 1/46; then temporary number 502 until 5/46 when it became 103. Characters were standard LNER shaded, not Gill Sans.

He made that claim when it was painted Brunswick Green at Babcocks..........why they should threaten him iv'e no idea as it was owned solely by Sir William then.......the people who were actualy threatend was Roland Kennington and David Ward.It left Babcocks and went to the Torbay railway and then to the Gloucester warwick.......which is where it was when he bought into it.richard wrote:I'm probably mis-remembering it, but I vaguely remember Waterman in an interview claiming he received hate mail from vicars when he suggested he should run it in WW2 black!

Re: Flying Scotsman
Well he has made some odd claims - like claiming the A1 Peppercorn Trust would not be able to get a mainline certificate. I think that claim was about a year before Tornado started midnight trials!
