I found this when going through some old discs and photos. It was too big to scan originally so I took a photo . Quite an interesting cutaway of her especially as she or a P2 is a project in the being.

A cutaway drawing, remarkably exceedingly similar to this, was included at the back of F A S Brown's biography: Nigel Gresley Locomotive Engineer, Ian Allan 1961.

My copy still has the drawing attached...

Great find. It reminds me of the sort of cutaway drawings that used to appear in the centre pages of the old 'Eagle' comics. I wonder if this one ever appeared in there.

IMHO only one other engine conveys that much power and beauty at the same time - 2002 Earl Marischal with the extra smoke deflectors!

Nice find, and a nice picture to, I was reading the other day that EM was used on the southern end of the ECML, when first built for testing etc, for about four months (without deflectors) so at least we have a good excuse to run a P2 up and down Stoke bank.

The wooden structure is an indicator shelter. These were built onto the front buffer beam to enable staff to monitor the cylinder pressures and performance whilst the loco was actually working.

EM i dont think you made it too clear to young Blackout that men actually were housed in the wooden shelter when the loco was undergoing trials. Ive never seen any video of an LNER loco equipped with one but i did see either an Arthur or a Lord Nelson pulling out of Waterloo from a link on here many moons ago ISTR BB may have posted the link.

I've actually seen a picture of a chap waving through the front spectacle plate of the shelter!

The wierdest thing I've ever heard of was a proposal (serious) to fix a tractor seat between the frames of a B17 so that potential frame flexing could be investigated. It got, so I understand, to the point of actually installing the seat before Authority said "no."
