60019 Bittern - nameplate colours

Post by Wizard of the Moor »

Can anyone tell me when Bittern made the switch from black to red nameplates?

I know that she had red plates in 1966 http://gallery62603.fotopic.net/p31801914.html

My suspicion is that the red plates appeared when she was transferred to ScR in 1963, but it would be nice to have confirmation.

Cheers,

James

James: The addition of a red background to 60019's nameplate seems to have happened in the engine's last year in service 1966. No 60024 also acquired a red background C1966 and I do remember seeing '24' without in summer 1965. I'm not sure whether this artistry was by Ferryhill shed or by enthusiast groups getting involved unofficially, which did happen in the last years of steam. I also remember A2 60532 with a blue background to its nameplate in September 1966. Various King's Cross A4s also carried red backings over the years.

So did she never wear red name plates while in garter blue before the war?
