Has anyone else seen the picttures of dominion of canada in steam railway (360)? I personally think it's terrible how it's been allowed to get so bad. I don't mind canada having an A4 but i think if the canadians can't look after it they should give it back!

How old are the pictures? I've seen varying reports of her condition - including emails from people responsible for cleaning her up a year or so ago (these are positive btw).

Hadn't realised she's a bit of a film star. Had seen the photo of her being driven by the Hon. Vincent Massey, Canadian High Commisioner in London at the time of the naming ceremony (he was the brother of actor Raymond Massey - remember him?) but had forgotten her role in the 50s remake of 'The 39 Steps' with Kenneth More in the scene on the Forth Bridge. Perhaps she has got scruffy in her old age, but at least the locomotive is still intact and under cover and presumably in no danger from the scrapman.

I can understand your concern Jon but things are not as bad as they would seem. For over 40 years 60010 has enjoyed safe, indoor display, (when, I might add, other less fortunate Canadian locos have rusted away outside) and is now in need of some cosmetic restoration and will get it, when funding becomes available. As for not minding Canada having an A4, let me explain something. The Canadian Railroad Historical Association (CRHA) saved this loco from the scappers torch. It was withdrawn, with a condemmed boiler, to be sold for scrap, I have seen the BR memo. It was sitting outside Darlington shed as an organ donor when the CRHA approached BR and suggested that in view of its Canadian connections, they might like to donate it as a centenary gift to Canada. The BR board were happy to, but could not pay for restoration or shipping. So CRHA put together the funding, through donations, but mainly from Tate and Lyle (who own Redpath sugar of Canada), that paid for her restoration at Crewe works. They also managed to get the Port of London Authority, Canadian Steamship Lines and the Port Of Montreal to all waive their very high fees for transport and shipping to Canada. If this locomotive belongs anywhere it is with the people who rescued her and gave her a new life. I could give you a long list of locos in the UK that are in far worse condition, but it would serve no purpose. Enjoy the A4's you are fortunate enough to have running over there and dont worry about 60010, unless of course you would like to make a large donation toward her restoration.....

I remember 60010 being sent down from Scotland by the Scottish Region for an intended repair at Darlington North Road only to be condemned on arrival and inspection (5/65) due to the condition of the boiler ,even though it was actually almost a new boiler (27970 new 10/60).The loco lay on the works line at Darlington shed 51A ( until 8/66)and looked very forlorn having had its chimney removed at some stage. So, it was with relief and gratitude to our Canadian friends that eventually she found a home in Canada after a cosmetic restoration at Crewe (shipped 10/67). There was also a rumour -there were always plenty of these - in 1964 that A4 60012 Commonwealth of Australia might find a home 'down under' after she was withdrawn in August 1964, but sadly nothing came of it.

Those photos were bad though, it showed one of the connecting rods in the tender!

I'll scan them once I get my printer back from PC World, and they have cleared it's imaginary paper jam!

Well blow me, PC World rang to say my printer was back from HP, on getting it home, they couldn't clear the jam either, and gave me a new one!

Good grief! Those pics look like something from 10,000 Leagues Under The Sea. I just went to the Canadian museum's website and found no mention or pics of 60010. I wonder wassup!

I have contact with someone who lives fairly close to the museum and was involved with the cosmetic restoration of the Terrier they also have. I've asked him to have a look at this thread and comment - after all, he can go down there and see for himself.
