Dummy Vans

Can anyone explain what a dummy van was? It was a term used by the MS&LR for some van types dedicated to special traffics.

No direct knowledge, but it suggests to me a van equipped with supports or frames for the intended goods.

What kinds of MS&LR special traffics were involved?
The Caledonian Railway Association has a thread at
https://www.crassoc.org.uk/forum/viewto ... 103d6e82de which, whilst not MS&LR related, might offer some pointers. The thread includes a reference to page 321 of "Caledonian Railway Carriages", which deals with conversions to 'dummy luggage vans' of two 'Greenock Stand Up Carriages'. The fact that the conversions apparently involved little work might be a hint that nothing more than removal of seats and partitions was required to create luggage space, so that the carriages concerned retained the appearance of passenger-carrying vehicles and may, in that sense, have been regarded as dummies - but that is nothing more than speculation on my part.

Fish, laundry, tobacco. Later diagrams have them as "produce vans"
