The May 1945 WTT shows the tanks being conveyed by passenger train between North Elmham and Norwich Trowse, This train was the 3.6pm from Wells to Norwich, arriving at Trowse 4.59pm.

The dairy ceased operating in 1963-64 after the "Western agreement" between BRB and MMB. Basically this concentrated milk flows into London from the west and south and led to rail services being withdrawn from pretty much all LNER and LMS country dairies. Bottling plants like Ilford remained open but the tankers now came from the west country and were tripped round north London.

I am not sure the dairy was ever used for grain storage (quite prepared to be mistaken on this). There was a large granary plant just south of the station on the opposite side of the level crossing. This remained operational into the 80s. Could this be what you are thinking of?

The milk traffic from North Elmham and Halesworth were well photographed by people such as the late Dr I Allen and published in various East Anglia books.

The following are a couple of low res scans from such publications.

If you happen to be a member of the GER Society a forthcoming Journal (during 2020) has an article that answers most questions on the United Dairies traffic.

If you aren't a member perhaps you might be persuaded to join? https://www.gersociety.org.uk/index.php ... bership-12
