Dear all,

Can anyone identify the carriage type / train that HNG| is sat in? Then (and this is a bit far fetched but its always worth asking) does anyone have any colour scheme information for the interior, upholstery etc?

This is the Coronation version

At a guess he is on the Silver Jubilee.

Table shape would suggest he is sitting in the Coronation.

If the caption to the top photo on p110 of LNER Album Vol 3 by Brian Stephenson is anything to go by, then it is probably the 1938 Hook Continental.

Yes - the Hook Continental seems to match. See the image on p. 420 of 'The Engineer' here:

I didn't think it could be a Coronation, West Riding Ltd or spare carriage as the seat fabric is the same pattern as in the beavertails, which the swatch books at the NRM show wasn't used any other vehicles of the above. I wonder if it is the blue and gold as used in 1719/29?

Sadly there are no swatch books for the Hook Continental.

He's holding a stopwatch. So maybe not the 'Hook'.

NRM Image 144/97 shows an identical Coronation interior, however it is recorded that the Hook Continental had luxurious interiors akin to the those of the Coronation, so it could be either.

Look at the window. Do you think it is steel panelled or teak panelled?

Personally I think I can see evidence of a glazing bead through the glass.

From LNER Carriages - Harris, Atlantic Publishers 1994/5 pg 66:- (Describing the Coronation interiors)

'There were two colour schemes in the first-class accommodation. One was in tones of green, with the chairs trimmed with scarlet braid and the carpet with a scarlet trellis pattern. The other scheme featured dark green Rexine for the lower internal panels and cream above, with the Rexine and doors studded with silver nails.'

The chair does definately have a 'trellis pattern' - but as the chairs are not described in the second scheme it's inconclusive.
I do not see any 'trellis pattern' in the carpet - it looks very plain to me.
I suggest that the dots on the panel behind his seat could be descibed as 'silver nails'.

The West Riding set had '...blue and brown stippled Rexine above the waist and silver below'.

It does not look like that to me - more like the 'dark green Rexine for the lower internal panels and cream above' of second scheme of the Coronation.

LNER Carriages Page 78:- (Describing the Hook Continental set)

'The open firsts - and the open section in the Dia 290 vehicle - were very similar to those in the 'Coronation' and 'West Riding' sets... The colour scheme was light green Rexine above the waist line and a darker shade below. The upholstery was green and fawn, with dark maroon carpets'

The panel colours seem to fit pretty well, the seats I am much less sure about, the carpet looks very near in shade to the lower panel of the Rexine behind HNG's seat - I don't believe it's 'dark maroon'.

If I had to put money on it I would say that the picture shows the second Coronation colour scheme.

I suggest that the picture was taken by one of the press on the publicity run of the Coronation prior to entering service - the one where it 'only' made 109 mph and they got SNG to hold a stopwatch to look like he's timing the train.
