OO Model - Ivatt GNR C1 (Bachmann) - What coaches to use with it?
Just took arrival of the new Bachmann/NRM Exclusive Ivatt C1 Atlantic No 251 in GNR livery - what a superb model it is too. was wondering what coaches to use with it? what are the alternatives? assume Pullmans are one option?

Depending on the type of service and location, you could use anything from Howlden 6 wheelers to 61' 6" Corridor stock!
I have photos showing trains hauled by C1s and made up of mixes of all periods of stock, especially on interval services on the Cambridge line and Parliamentary trains to Peterboro'. Often used on Pullmans up to about 1930.

Technically, the model is of the loco as preserved, so it should be run with early BR carriages to replicate the post grouping runs.
Otherwise in GNR livery one would hope to run early Gresley carriages in GNR livery, or Clerestories in ECJS.
However the nice green LNER liveried one would look really nice hauling Pullmans.

Hi Chaps,
I bought the LNER livered example, its a lovely loco, and I'm chuffed that locomotion models took the gamble to get them built.
mines just going to go behind 61'6" teaks and Pullmans,

You could run the early LNER period upto say 1925-7. With the engine in G.N. livery and some of the R-T-R Gresleys available from Hornby. The only major downer is that the said coaches date from the thirties, unfortunately

The new Hornby Pullmans would be OK from 1932 onwards when the Pullman livery was changed, e.g. the "Queen of Scots" had these new Pullmans (2 sets of 8 coaches) when they were built in 1928 - loco headboards were used from 1932 onwards. The LNER Class C1 4-4-2s operated these Pullmans to and from Leeds (Central) until 1936 when the A1 Pacifics were permitted to run through to Leeds. There was a link of 4 locos at Copley Hill - Nos. 3280, 4423, 4433 and 4460 - that operated the QoS (according to Yeadon). Thus the Bachmann model of 3251, which was a KX based loco, would only have got to operate the service in case of a failure of the Leeds engine in London. Good enough for me. It think that the other Pullman Service "Yorkshire Pullman" was made up of the older matchboarded Pullmans, inckluding the older ex-GER ones at first although newer Pullman coaches were introduced in about 1938/9 (according to Banks & Carter) with still two 12-wheel cars but with three 1931 built all-steel cars (ex-SR). Again KX based locos were used on this service, as well as Atlantics from Doncaster. By the way, this does give the opportunity of using Class N2 and D49 locos on the Halifax and Hull portions respectively.
Going back to the title of this post - the "Ivatt GNR C1" class Atlantics were the original small-boilered versions, e-g- No. 990. The second class to appear on the GNR, beginning with No. 251, got the next numerical classiification, i.e. C2. The Problem has, I think, been compounded by the LNER re-classifiying the classes after the grouping so that the more powerful engines, 251 et seq., became Class C1 and the small-boilered locos became C2. Perhaps the wording "Ivatt LNER C1 Atlantic" would have been better and correct.

N1s would be just as likely on the Halifax workings. Doncaster based LNER C1s also worked the Hull portion.

It is true that in GNR days when the system was revised, both type of Tender Atlantics were classified C1. In fact C2 was the designation for
the Atlantic tanks which later became C12 on the LNER/BR
The classification of GNR locos is full of pitfalls for the unwary, not least the Ivatt 0-6-0's which were either J21 or J22 with no
real definition until you get into the real details/

Apologies in case I lead anyone astray - I obviously misread my Yeadon and don't have the appropriate Green Book.
Another possible train, albeit mainly with a Cambridge based C1, was the "Cambridge & Garden Cities Buffet Express", which would give a chance to use the Hornby Buffet Car (although this version is not strictly correct), if you can fit the train title onto the buffet coachboard! Apparantly, the first down service of the day was operated by a KX based loco - e.g. 3251.
