G5 in Leeds, looking for details?

Post by Robpulham »

Hi All,

I have been asked to build a G5 for a friend who wants it to be finished as late BR as possible and shedded at Leeds.

Using Yeadon's volume 38 I have narrowed it down o a choice of 67262 or 67325 both of which lasted to 57/58 at Neville Hill.

What I am struggling for is photos of them in BR days and to understand if they would still have a Westinghouse Pump fitted (the kit comes with one) at the end?

Many thanks in advance for any pointers.

The green books are no more helpful than Yeadon on the brakes point.

Neither of your locos is shown as having been fitted with steam brake and the Westinghouse removed. But it appears the lists may be incomplete.

So photographic evidence is the only option, to be absolutely sure.

Thanks for the input John,

The only real thing of value that I got from Yeadon (I did look in the green book too) was that neither of them had the hopper built up on top of the cage on the bunker.

Sadly photos of these particular two seem to be as rare as hen teeth:0(

Hi Robpulham,

67262 - 'Railway Memories No. 3 - LEEDS', Bellcode Books, by Peter Rose - three quarter rear view, L.H. side, inside Neville Hill on internal turntable, 2nd February 1958, Westinghouse Pump fitted, but unable to identify hose connections other than vacuum standpipes. Small BR lion and wheel totem, G.S. buffers, bunker cage but no hopper.

67325 - 'Railway Memories No.22 - RETURN TO LEEDS', Bellcode Books, by Rose and Anderson - three quarters front view R.H. side, West End Leeds City NE station, 16th June 1958, Vacuum and steam heat hoses visible, but No Westinghouse connection. Small BR lion and wheel totem, G.S. buffers, bunker cage - but looking from acute angle, does not appear to be fitted with a hopper.

Hope this pair of hen's teeth are helpful ! :)

I forgot to add the page numbers for the G5 loco illustrations:
67262 - P.48, 'Railway Memories No. 3'
67325 - P.78, 'Railway Memories No. 22'

This little titbit is one of the few details that I could glean from Yeadon's entry, neither were fitted with a hopper.

The GS buffers is interesting because I think that those with the kit are NER.

Thanks again.
