G'day all
Whilst studying books under the midnight oil lamp, I found mention in Michael Harris's book of a quad for the Hertford line.
It consisted of the following:

D102 51'1 3 compartment brake second
D103 43'5 4/2 compartment composite
D104 43'5 7 compartment third
D105 51'1 8 compartment third.

I a wondering if it is possible to construct this from Kirk kits.

D102 from 8833 Full brake and 8834 Full third
D103 from shortened 8836 Composite
D104 from shortened 8834 Full third
D105 from 8834 Full third

It should be an easy conversion (infamous last words), but sadly Isinglass don't do a drawing of the quad. There only appears to be two running numbers for each coach, so presumably there was only two sets.

PS Perhaps I should have posted this in the model forum.

Perhaps you should turn your wick up a bit more If you were reading Harris then you should have discovered that there were 14 sets, and that one vehicle of the Quad shared its Diagram (105 - 8 compt 3rd) with one vehicle in the GN Section twins, with shorter vehicles inserted in the centre. So adapting Kirk kits is possible if you can get the Brake Van end arrangement to match.

The Diagrams all appear in Harris' Standard Gresley Carriages, Mallard (self-published) 1998, and should be sufficient to give you door and panel arrangements and leading dimensions. End details and articulated underframes and bogies are all detailed elsewhere.

Two vehicles were provided with replacement bodies.

'Corse it would be possible to supply etchings for these quads.

There's even a choice - Mike Radford (MARC Models) also does them.

Thanks for info on models for the Hertford Quads.

Whilst I'm sure the etched kits would make great models, I'm not yet competent enough to build expensive etched kits and do them justice.

I recently bought a job lot of Kirk kits, so would have the 4/5 needed in stock.

I am one of those "cussed" souls who enjoy walking up a hill when there is a perfectly adequate bus/train service to the top.

if you do not practice, you will never have the courage to start building etched kits.

Start small, say a van or two, get the skill and then build up to some coaches or a loco, but do not expect to be perfect from the
get go, almost no one is, but one thing with etched kits is you can always go back and add bits on later when your skills improve,
but never building one at all means you will never improve.

The Hertford quads seem to have been photographed very rarely. I believe they were displaced from the Hertford East services after the Southend Victoria electrification, which cascaded then still pretty new Thompson non-gangwayed stock to other GE services. The Hertford quads, or at least some of them, then found work on services between Hull and Brough.

Thanks Robert for the info that the Hertford Quads moved to Yorkshire.

The general area that I model is pre-war Yorkshire, so if I invoke the Modellers Time Travel Licence, I will have an excuse to construct the Quad.

Thanks again for all the replies and information.

Research has shown that the building of a Hertford Quad would be more difficult than thought.

The 3 compartment brake would be more difficult as the paneling on the brake portion is different from that of the full brake.

The compartment size of the composite differs from both the full First and full Third.

I will file the project in the pending tray.
