I am building a Wild Boar Ransome & Rapier 45ton crane and would like to know if anyone can tell me what type of support coaches would run with it in the late 1950's/early 60's. I am trying to find if there was any Gresley or Thompson stock used and if so what the diagram and stock numbers would be.
Am I right in thinking the stock numbers were in the DE range.
Thanks

When I get around to my breakdown train, it's having a Howlden six wheel full brake among the assemblage of support vehicles - presumably in use as a stores/tool van. Those were definitely still extant in this sort of service at your dates.
There's a fabulous (Colour-Rail I think) picture from 1958 of a circa 1900 GNR/ECJS clerestory coach in an engineers train near Wood Green headed by a J6. The old coach is much modified and all black and 'wonky', looks apt to fall apart any moment. At the rear of the same train is a crimson liveried non-gangwayed composite, probably Gresley, and I would guess in use as the riding van.
