Pre 1937 Livery Layout for an ex GCR CCT

Hi All,

I am trying to track down a photo of the livery layout of an ex GCR CCT so that I can add the transfers to my recently completed D&S kit in 7mm. having found photos of the builds by Jonathan and a few other's there seems to be a data panel in the bottom right hand corner of the side with the running number and 'LCK' above it. If anyone had details of the data panel that would be great too so I can create/ have created some transfers.

Many thanks for any pointers.

Assuming this is for the pre 1937 livery. I've looked through all the NPCS photos I can find and come to the conclusion that the numbers would be place under the large ''E' unless the number would have been not visible when the vehicle doors were open. In which case the numbers and type code were placed at the right hand end of the sides. The post 1937 livery had a small 'NE' over the type code and the number at the bottom left hand of the sides, with 'XP' and the wheelbase at the bottom right.

Thanks Bill, I appreciate you having a look. On that basis my guestimate wasn't too far out and the number wouldn't be obscured by the open door.

Below is what I have done so far (before wondering if I had it correct) - the remaining question is would the LCK be above the number or below it?

Campling book has pictures of ex NER and GNR versions . All have the code and small lettering in the right hand corner, one photo of a GNR has MCK first with the the number below that only.

If you need the full version

MCK to what ever code for vehicle
length
width
extreme height
wheelbase
load
tare
All in captital lettering sizes to suit vehicle.
If you need them made up i recommend Precision labels top service (customer only).

Thanks Mick,
I never thought of looking in the coaching book - I did look at the NPCS volume.

Now to attempt to dig out the sizes

Thanks again.

I'm not sure about the Campling drawings, in as much as the having the code and number at the right end with the extended data was the BR livery. There is also a note in the first edition of Tatlow's wagon book to the effect that the height of the lettering, code and 'NE' was reduced from 4" to 3" as a wartime expediency. I believe that the smaller sizes became standard post war.

Re Campling ,there are photos of the vehicles as described in my last post in the book, all are large early NE versions.

Another good example are the current post 1937 LNER Long CCT's by Hornby.

Thanks Bill,

While I cannot comment on the drawings, they do match up to the photos that Mick refers to - in terms of them being pre 1937 livery with the data panel.

Does anyone have an idea of the tare weight for these CCT's?

The photos in question were taken in 1938, so it looks like there was a hybrid livery with a large pre 1937 'NE' and a post 1937 data panel. In the GNR CCT photo the background to the data panel seems to have been at least cleaned if not repainted.

I have a tare of 10-14-0 for diagram 1U7. They are also marked 'to carry 5 Tons'

This a old photo of a Chivers NER version built by me (there maybe more on my build thread , I haven't checked). This was built using the Tatlow article in MRJ including original photos of same type of vehicle. I have the magazine somewhere.

As to the comments re the GNR/NER CCT's both vehicles look very faded for something painted at most a year earlier. I very much doubt they are of vehicles painted in 1938.

Please excuse the horrible scan of a scan, I don't have the original Backtrack to hand.

A former Great Northern CCT taken in 1926, still dual fitted.

The layout conforms to Mick b's models.

I hope this helps,

John

Please find attached a small fragment of a postcard taken at York in 1936.

It shows some of the lettering layout for the GCR CCT, with large letters, not very clear but useful I trust.
scan062 GCR CCT York 1936 W L Good.jpg
The large E is placed to the right of the door stop, with the top bar of the letter just above its height.

The LCK and number are to the right of the pad, on which the label clip sits, LCK being above the number.

I have tried to alter the contrast but the lettering on the original is rather faint. The chalked figure '9' appears to be over the small lettering panel, but it is not clear. It may be very like the GNR example above.

John

Thanks for the input gents - it's most appreciated.
It seems that I have a couple of choices but given that John's last photo is of the van in question as opposed to other varieties of CCT I think that I will modify my number position to sit under the LCK in the bottom right hand corner and leave my NE as I have it - it's marginally lower than that of John's photo but I can live with that.

Thanks again.
