There are moderately well reproduced GA's of the A1 boiler in Nock's 'The Gresley Pacifics'. The dimensions indicate that the grate is 7' wide, 5'10" in length (rounding off fractions of inches). The plan area this suggests is slightly shy of the quoted 41.25 sq ft, but the firebars sloped downwards from the firehole, increasing the grate area slightly.)

Hi Hatfield.. thanks for that...I do have Nock's book on Gresley's pacific's and know the basic's... my fault i didn't explain what i was looking for enough....I would like to see a drawing or images, preferably both ,of the fire bar layout itself.. this has eluded me so far..
regards
Pete

Pete,
the grate was not too dissimilar to that on the A1 by Peppercorn, so it might well be logical to ask the A1 trust if they have something.
Reason I suggest this route, is these kinds of detail drawings are rarely on the list of drawings to be preserved.
Have you checked the York drawing list for Doncaster drawings to see if they are listed?

Pete,
Ask the NRM for Doncaster drawings X720 and X723, although I wouldn't expect you to put rows of individual fire bars in to your model. The A1 drawing will not be of any use since they had rocking grates.

There's a different layout in the A4 firegrate too. Narrower firebars compared to the earlier boilers to increase air admission over the A3 by 40% I believe.

The two Doncaster drawings for the grate are dated June 1942 and are for use on Classes A3, A4, A10 and V2. So all the grates were identical at that time. If the A4s originally had wider spacing I don't think that would have survived the loco sheds. One firebar looks much the same as another and if it was the right length it would be used regardless of class.
