Locomotive Mystery

Can anyone assist with this photograph which I found recently on the 'net'? (credit to the original photographer - unknown).

The front buffer beam of the loco clearly shows the number '2811', which makes it a Class 'C1' 4-4-2 - and indeed the photo is captioned as such.

Equally clearly, this is no 4-4-2, nor is it a C1 ..........but undisputedly a 'Sandringham'.

Can any of our more knowledgeable members explain this rather odd apparent discrepancy?

Referring to Green Books 2B and 3A:-

2811 Raynham Hall was a B17 (Sandringham) built in August 1930. In February 1946, it became 1611 and then 61611 under BR.

A C1, originally numbered 3282 when built in May 1924, was renumbered as 2811 in 1946. It was withdrawn before it received a BR number.

Thanks Kestrel - That would seem to make sense. Thought I was going mad! (wouldn't be hard).

Pleasure Orford. Just a case of knowing where to look and having the books to hand.

Yet again the LNER numbers game, good job there are a few learned men among us who can generally unravel these posers.

It's not a case of being learned I assure you, it's just a case of having the 'Green Bible' to hand.
