Can anyone tell me why two consecutively numbered WD's 90773 and 90774 were BOTH called "North British" when there was already Peppercorn A1 60161?

All I can tell you is that both of the WDs were named by NBL so nowt to do with the LNER or BR.

To elaborate, the 2 WD 2-10-0s were named by the builders, the North British Locomotive Co , the last 2 built of the entire class of 150 locos (BR Nos 90773/90774, WD Nos 73798/773799). However, the only photos I can readily put my hands on are of 90773 on completion in 1945 and 90774 in 1949, so I don't know if they were both carrying the nameplates simultaneously or whether they were 'swopped over'. The A1 Pacific, no 60161, wasn't built until 1949 and not named until later. The name referred to the North British Railway.

The last of the Vulcan Foundry built 2-8-0s (WD no 79312, BR 90732) was named Vulcan, although I don't know when. The plate was still being carried as late as 9/59 although a Britannia (70024) was given the same name several years earlier.

Topic title leaves this discussion open to more than just WD's,
so, as far as I am aware, name duplication has occurred in a fair few classes. A number of A4's, at least one Princess Coronation and at least one 9F have shared names. A4 names include Osprey (4488 and 4494), Sir Ralph Wedgwood (4469 and 4466), Woodcock (4489 and 4493) and Great Snipe (4495 and 4462). LMS no.6220 shared her name with an earlier LMS design and 9F no.92214 carried the name Cock 'O The North for a few years, a name shared with a P2, and also I believe, a former NBL loco

I believe the OP was really talking about two locomotives carrying the same name concurrently. Name transfers have happened throughout the time locomotives have carried names.

I didn't know about the WDs, but there were two Quicksilvers on the LNER for quite some time.

There were two LNER locos carrying the name Prince of Wales from 1926 until 1960.
A1/A3 2553 was renamed Prince of Wales in 1926.
D11 5508 was Prince of Wales until it's withdrawal in 1960.

Thanks very much - I was aware of the more "glamorous" duplications but not of the WD's. I still don't understand why they named consecutive loco's the same but suppose I never will.

dont forget the J36s and D11 -a few duplicates there.

The opposite of name duplication; I've often wondered why there was never a D49 named 'Northamptonshire". Both the GN and GC main lines ran through the county.

Although I'm certainly not a supporter of hunting, no Northamptonshire hunt was chosen either; although 'The Fernie', based in Market Harboro, was.

Don't forget that 6947 and 61647 were in service concurrently!
