Hi Everyone,

I wonder if anyone could help with a photo of the inside of a smoke box of a J73? A strange question you may think but here's what I have;
This is from my J73 O gauge model and shows a big gap where a blast pipe and other gubbins should be. The model is much further along now and I'm stuck here really. The GA drawing doesn't help so I'm hoping somebody could help please with an internal smoke box shot. I know a J73 is a tall order so another like NER class would do, maybe the preserved J27 or J72 ?? Just something to point me the right way?

Hi Mick,

I agree, looks like a cracking model. One day I hope to build one. I know very little about the J26/27 but this one looks superheated which is no good for me as my J73 wasn't. I was really after a photo of the real thing to be honest. Thank you for replying though, much appreciated,

This photo of a stripped down 65099 http://www.flickr.com/photos/24041160@N ... 27463@N22/ shows the upper tubeplate with the saturated header for the twin external steam pipes(missing) which might help you.The j73 has horizontal slide valves above the block,if I interpret the GA correctly, as does Lambton No 5, and possibly 29. This pair may well have some similarities to a J73 in the shape of the steam pipes and cylinder block top arrangements within the smokebox.

The Class L (J73) used a Diagram 69 boiler which was common to other NER classes including Classes A (F8), G (D23), O (G5) and P (J24). No doubt the smokebox arrangement was also very similar for these classes and perhaps the National Railway Museum at York has smokebox drawings for these classes that could be used.

If you can visit Shildon then a new build of a Class O (G5) is in progress, http://www.g5locomotiveltd.co.uk/
and the preserved Class C (J21), which also has a similar boiler, can be viewed at 'Locomotion' the NRM at Shildon, although I do not know if the smokebox is complete internally as it has only been restored cosmetically.

The North Eastern Railway Association has listed in their collection under NERA 1583 - Class G5 locomotive, Smokebox Arrangement, Scale Three inches to One foot. Drawing No. 1-3623D. Rolled plan.

Have a look at the third photo down on this page. It's not a NER loco, but shows the basic arrangement of the smokebox pipework for most saturated locos.
