We could always go back to the roots and use "Somarled" and get away from all this Romantic shush that Scott foisted on the Victorians.Micky wrote:Gentlemen it's got to be 'Cock O'The North' because it's an L.N.E.R. locomotive. I think the 'old man' would agree to that. Lord of the Isles sounds to much like that Dean GWR single wheeler!.

If the loco is to be technically not quite fully "Cock o' the North", then maybe the name should also be not quite the original. It is said that he fifth Duke of Gordon originally had the unusual name, so maybe the loco should be Duke of Gordon.

On that basis, seeing as the new loco will probably not spend as much time on Scottish soil as the 1930s-built locos did, a "not quite the original name" could be 'Cock 'O the North East'...If the loco is to be technically not quite fully "Cock o' the North", then maybe the name should also be not quite the original.

Re: So what shall we name the new P2?
What about" Lady of the Lake" for a P2 name ,giving it connections with many parts of the country through Sir Walter Scot and Arthurian legend even west coast connection through past locomotives.

I'm still loving Lady of Lochleven - redtoon's suggestion is the most elegant and best tie in of the lot so far (in my opinion).

Not overly fussed what they call it, all I want to see is the P2 taking 600 tons over 'Stoke' then I'll shout out 'Come on you little beauty'

Seeing as the latest names are effeminising 'Cock 'o The North', shall we go with 'Fanny By Gaslight'...?

Or for female names, there's Violet Gresley - Sir Nigel's daughter who accompanied him a lot.
