on the same vein as BB didn't Blue Peter slip to a very high speed at Durham a few years ago!. I remember seeing a video on the net somewhere with estimated speeds in the text.

Blue Peter did 15-200mph (approx) in an instant and water carry-over ensured that the regulator couldn't be closed quickly. It is a frightening video with huge bits of motion flying all over the place. I saw the connecting rods at York after the event and they were bent like so much warm toffee. I'll have a look for the piccy.

That is a very sad sight, and some of the comments below the YouTube video are rather un-necessary.

It is a horrifying video. We are lucky the locomotive was able to be repaired... eventually.

150mph wheel spin. Certainly a record no one wanted to claim

Actually, on another note, I recall Green Arrow had a similar accident whilst on the Scarborough Flyer in 2003 I think?
Obviously nowhere near as severe but one of the connecting rods was destroyed and by chance the NRM happened to have a spare that was kept as a souvenir form York's last shedmaster. It was replaced immediately and Green Arrow was back in service not long after.

This caused a water carry-over which bent the inside coupling rod. I saw the rod at York shortly after. Horrific. I got a piccie somewhere - I'll dig it out.

I was at the NRM a few weeks after the Green Arrow incident, hence the photos on the V2 page:

http://www.lner.info/locos/V/v2.shtml

My understanding at the time was that it was nothing to do with priming or wheel slip. Instead, it lost its middle big end at speed, resulting in the middle con rod hitting ballast at speed. Hence the bend con rod (and only one bent con rod), bust piston, etc. I assume a new piston was easy enough to fabricate. The replacement con-rod (a heavy bit of forging) was reportedly in use as a door stop at the NRM...

Thanks for that, Richard. Saves me searching my piccie CDs. A frightening example of the sheer power of steam locomotion.

That con rod's an awful sight  .Well, all I can say is thank God it didn't happen on my two trips behing the wonderful Arrow to Scarborough. The two trips I had were in 2001 and 2002, shame really that I struggle to remember them as I was only 5/6 at the time. Safe to say I've got plenty of years ahead of me to see Green Arrow steam again

Apparently, Tornado was due to set a record of sorts yesterday - see link.

Does anyone know how the trip went?

Ay up!

Let's hope she did. Pity no-one was aware of the fact that in the early 1950s, A1 were ALLOCATED to Glasgow...
