EDGWARE GN, Steam in the Suburbs.
Re: Bittern's Garter Blue Makeover
A classic amid todays weed strewn Kings X. It's sad to see the railway looking much like the canals did back in the 1950s.

The picture is mine (on page 1) ,we were working into the late hours Friday getting it ready..............but iv'e just watched a video of it going through Durham, where incidentaly the owner was on the footplate, not something he does very often, and what a sight (and sound),anybody not moved by that ain't a steam enthusiast, just want to see one of it passing Darlington now ! All in all a cracking run which made it all worthwhile.

Re: Bittern's Garter Blue Makeover
My 3 year old daughter who was with me yesterday has decided that A4's are now better than Electric's but not as good as a class 37! I think a trip to see the loco again is called for, hopefully with some teak's behind it!
Have to also say thanks to Mr Hosking for giving me and others the opportunity to see an A4 at it's best, having seen the footage at Durham I wish I'd been there!

Re: Bittern's Garter Blue Makeover
Just to add a bit of balance there was another big blue engine out and about yesterday. These two shots were from a number taken by a member of our facebook site and shows number 7 in North Northumberland. Its a pity the first shot hadnt been from the early 1960s as there would have been a plume of water from the engine as it takes on water at Lucker. The pictures are by Richard Abercrombie and the aircraft for those interested in these things is Piper Super Cub G-BCJI belonging to the Border Gliding Club at Milfield.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
Re: Bittern's Garter Blue Makeover
Unfortunately, those stunning pics of SNG confirm one thing to me. SNG is still my favourite of the A4s, and particularly when in the express passenger blue livery.
Thanks for sharing, its amazing how two blue A4s can lighten the mood considerably!

If the first shot was at the site of the troughs at Lucker.
Does that explain the field shape on the left with the odd boundary profile?
The site of trackside buildings perhaps?

Bittern Looks amazing, thank you for posting these.
don't forget about the Great Eastern Railway
Re: Bittern's Garter Blue Makeover
I think the aerial shot is just south of Lucker station, the troughs were further north beyond Adderstone bridge.

Has anbody yet seen or photographed "4492" as currently at the NRM? Is she in a decent position for viewing/photography? Has her departure date/time been fixed?

I have a nice shot of her on the down slow through Arlesey on Sunday, but the file is too big to post. How do I reduce it to under 500 meg?

Download the free software "Irfanview" (http://www.irfanview.com). This is a very quick and handy tool for sharpening images, lightening/darkening, selecting image size, cropping, inserting credite etc and saving as JPEG format, at which you can specify the file size. I post lots of photos on [plug]www.drehscheibe-online.de (Historische Forum) [/plug], and after scanning my old slides at 1600 pixels wide (5mB), I use Irfanview to size them to 800x600, which fits most people's monitors, then save them as JPEG with file size of 150kB. To upload them to forums I use the free "Imageshack" (http://www.imageshack.com).giner wrote:I have a nice shot of her on the down slow through Arlesey on Sunday, but the file is too big to post. Hope this helps - look forward to seeing your fot!

To the "young" ones who commented earlier on the quality of the finish. I can assure them that that kind of high class finish was attained prior to WW2. I saw the West Riding Ltd several times at Wakefield, both northbound and southbound, and the whole train was as clean as new pin. I have a vivid mental image of bright sunlight reflecting off the A4. Sorry, but I was too young to note the names at that time.
