Yes, well, erm.....

Now do we have an enterprising, skillful, software-equipped photo image manipulator of our own on LNER forum. How about a "virtual life" rendition of one of those locos I suggested, in a real location, or maybe Daddy Ivatt's proposed but never built 2-6-2 mixed traffic equivalent of his large boilered Atlantic? Had a large boilered prairie already appeared on the GN some years before Gresley actually tried out his first small boilered Mogul, how might that have influenced things - supposing it had succeeded at all given the prevailing freight work of the day?

Hi All,

I thought I'd join in with the Photoshoppery.

Heres my version of Gresley's 4-8-2 with extended smokebox, larger firebox, V fronted cab & slightly raised footplate over the cylinders.

Doesn't the smokebox seem just a bit too long, and the superheater cover plates 'feels' like they are in the wrong place. Eg. perhaps it should be further forward or be longer? (for extended superheater tubes into the smokebox - at the moment, the tubes barely make it in there!)

That is exactly the way it was in the proposed drawing Richard. The boiler was basically a diagram 107 but with a 50 square foot grate. To take up the extra length the smokebox had to be long, therefore the superheater header covers were in the normal place next to the front tubeplate. It was felt there would be no benefit from having a longer boiler barrel.

Remember that the A1s and A2s all had longer smokeboxes!

I agree it does look oddly proportioned. I kept the boiler at its standard A3 length & based the superheater covers on their position on the Thompson pacifics i.e. right at the back of the smokebox.

I based the pic on attached file below, which I found somewhere on these forums
