Only as I said the low cabside windows on the 16/1s
Both rebuilds were a dream to fire and ride as well as the 1s.
The 16/1s windows,as were all N.E built loco's, Q1s as well, you had to almost bend double to get your head out, often wondered if N.E men were all short arsed or something
Only ever got these two types as far a Sheffield/Darnall, Qs came through with plate steel heading for South Wales,we took them as far as Annersley.
The return workings were always two full outward trains behind one loco used to be the longest train you would ever see, usually second out of Annersley on a Monday behind an Austerity.
Darnall crews worked all the goods between there and Darnall and our first trip sign on at 0001 Monday and was engine and two brakes to Annersley, usually behind a K3, with three more crews as well as the crew working ther e&bs.
They took the first one out, a class "c" with the same loco they had brought outwards, and were usually back in Darnall by 03.30.
We had a system where Annersley and back was a full shift and could go home irrespective of how long you had worked, just lost the 1/4 extra time for hours after signing off so basically about 1/2 hours pay, worth it to get to bed about 4.30.
The bug bear of this was passenger crews would work Liecester and back and had to dippose of the engine when they got back.
Us poor common goods link men used to think "Oh dear, what a pity, never mind".
