Dave,

Perfect. At some point in the future we will be tackling the rebuild of 42969 (Doncaster 1929) so will be extremely useful having these in the archives.

Hello

I am trying to find some information about the Dia 10 and 10a restaurant 1sts in BR days. In particular, I'm interested to know withdrawal dates, did any get maroon livery and are any photos known from the 1950s period? 9002/9003 seem to have been renumbered by BR - anyone know when or why?

Hi 40057.
Dia 10 Restaurant cars = 2 number built.
681 built 1926, renumbered 9000 (1943), 2867 (Nov 1947), 42970?, cond March 1961
22251 built 1925, renumbered 9001 (1943) later number ?, cond Mach 1961.

Dia 10A Restaurant cars = 2 number built.
676 built 1925, renumbered 9002 (1943) 2865 (Nov 1947) 320921 (Dec 1961) cond March 1961
677 built 1925, renumbered 9003 (1943) 2866 ( March 1948) 320916 (Nov 1961) cond March 1961
As far as I know the above is correct for the info I have, but my dia book states Dia 10, 1 built 1925 and 1 built 1927.

Bit of a generalisation, but catering vehicles lasted much longer than ordinary service vehicles and many pregrouping vehicles made it to maroon, let alone the LNER built ones. There's a very good article by Clive Carter in Backtrack on these which gives a lot of information.

Backtrack May 1995, oh dear I also have it listed under May 1997, which one is correct ?.

There were two articles, the first covered Kitchen Cars (Vol 10 Number 11), the second Restaurant Cars (Vol 11 Number 5)

You're absolutely right. I recall seeing a Gresley buffet in BR blue & grey at Doncaster in the 70s - in a rake of Mk 1s I think.

There were two reasons that some of the Gresley buffet cars survived as long as they did. Firstly, the late survivors were all extensively modernised in the late 1950s with propane gas cooking, as on Mark I catering cars. Secondly, changes in demand meant BR needed more buffet cars and fewer restaurant cars. So much so that lots of Mark I unclassed restaurants were rebuilt to a greater or lesser degree to include buffet counters, as were most of the LMR's restaurant firsts. The robust construction of the Gresley cars and their bogies, which gave a better ride than BR bogies, would have helped too.
