Discussion and reference site for the London North Eastern Railway
During mid 1956 my mother and I went by rail from Driffield to Scarborough. Due to a road accident at the Humanby level crossing the return trip had to be via York and Beverley. The train engine from Scarborough to York was none other than 61659 "East Anglian".
Also noted in Scarborough shed sidings was a D20 awaiting scrapping. It was not present in my then current Ian Allan book but in a much earlier copy.
One B17 that turned up at Hull Paragon ca1955 exworks ( presumably Doncaster) was 61620 Clumber,I think a Cambridge engine. The sighting has been confirmed by others, and caused quite a stir amongst the spotters at the time!!
I came across this whilst trying to find out how easy it would be to change a Hornby "Thope Hall" to 61617 "Ford Castle".
It is not easy, as that particular loco was re-built to a B2.
My question is, which Liverpool station(s) did the B17s run into? Lpool Exch or Lpool Central? Which MPD would they be serviced at?
Bank Hall or Brunswick?

To the best of my knowledge the boat train ran into Liverpool Central but the B17 didn't. In the LNER days of through B17's, it came off at Manchester Central, where the train reversed, in BR days before electrification it wasn't a GE B17 job, after electrification the March B17 only worked to Sheffield Victoria.
Plate 59 in the Ian Allan book 55 years of East Anglian steam shows 61658 The Essex Regiment at Bentley. The caption states that it is on an Edinburgh to Colchester train. It also says this train was first put on in the war and lasted to the diesel era but lattery as a parcels train.
I don't know the route this train took or how far the B17s took it for but the potential considering failures etc. could put a B17 quite far North for the purpose of a model.
I recently purchased a copy of Colour Rail slide BRE204 of 61620 stated to be at Challoners Whin on an all red and cream nine coach York to Hull train on an unknown date. The loco is not ex-works. Allowing for the length of the shadows and full leaf trees it would suggest an evening time. There is at least one Mk1 carriage in the consist. Loco is green with large early BR emblem. To add credence to Challoners Whin it is on the easternmost of four tracks. It has just passed under a colour light signal gantry with a horizontal and 45 degree "feather" over serving the other? southbound line.

You are right, it was early evening. I saw her go through Cottingham - not ex works but very well cleaned. Unfortunately I have no record of the precise time or date but I reckon it would have been early spring/summer 1958 or 1959.
Throughout the 1950's up to about 1958 March B17's often appeared on the daily Colchester-Newcastle express as far as York and the return working. It was more often a V2 and then March Brits started to appear in the early 60's on the Saturday train.

From one Cottingham exile to another - That is one I missed then, I never saw a B17 through Cott.
The strange thing about this sighting is that a Hull York train via Cottingham would not have passed Challoners Whin ( I am not doubting that you saw it). A Hull York train via Selby would pass the said junction. Maybe the caption is wrong or maybe it was working the stock forward to Doncaster.
In the late '50s there was always an interesting train through Cottingham around 8:00pm, more than likely York bound, still steam hauled despite the abundance of DMUs, I wonder if it could have been that train? Probably a bit too late.

I'm sure that the purists from another discussion group might pooh-pooh this attitude as not strictly accurate, but who cares?
Just remember the three rules of exhibiting:
1: It is my trainset and I wil lrun what I like.
2: You may ask me about anything you see and I will answer truthfully.
3: If you do not like what you see, please see rule 1.
Also:
If a man's idea of modelling heaven is a red A3 hauling American stock through an Alpine setting with Australian placenames then let him have it.
Just remember the three simple rules...
Above all, remember it is a hobby and it exists for enjoyment. I model S & D 1950s - 1960s but that doesn't stop me owning the Hush-Hush. I was going to post a picture of it here but my conputer has had a Snit.
If I ain't here, I'm in Bilston, scoffing decent chips at last!!!!
