61668 Bradford City was at Southend in 1960 in the hope that someone would recall steam to Shenfield and preserve her. Recall that electrification of the LTSR was started and it had already been decided that 42500 would be preserved. But there was no interest.

Don't forget that from about 1954 to 1962, Ivatt N1 no: 69461 served as a stationary boiler just along the way at Shoeburyness. Even though it had not run since 1954, it was technically the last N1 in existence, not being cut up until the early part of 1963.
I don't know if this was ever done. B17s carried a Diag.100 boiler, whilst the B1s had a Diag.100A - I think there were differences which meant they were not interchangeable.manna wrote:....when a B17 was scrapped would the boiler have been used again, on a B1....

But since most B17 were converted to B17/6 by substitution of a 100A boiler for the original dia 100, retention for re-use of any boilers with significant remaining service life seems quite possible. Probably depended as much as anything else what the reserve boiler stock was like at the time any B17 was scrapped at Doncaster. They could equally go to O4/8 or Thompson O1.
That N1 in use as a stationary boiler looks very interesting with that C19th French styling to the chimney.

Re: Locos stored / dumped at Southend Victoria
I do have a couple of very poor B & W shots (not taken by me) of the last B17 61668 Bradford City in store at 30D Southend Victoria in about 1960 with assorted 0-6-0's ....which would mean a lot to one of the previous posters, a Mr G J Benians with whom I spent a lot of my youth chasing steam engines, especially as I recall he came to Essex from Bradford!!
Having lost touch with Guy, I am still slightly stunned to track him down with just a search for a steam loco (just putting 61668 in Google did the trick!!) that clearly made a mark on both of us at the time, perhaps becauseit was the last survivor of a relatively short-lived class.
Talking of last survivors, we both tracked down the last 0-6-2Tof the old LT&SR (41981) in the back of Plaistow shed (33A) about a year later, but that is not a story for he LNER Encyclopedia, I guess.
I would b interested to see the shot found by one of the other posters of 61668 by HMRS.
