F4s in Hull

Can anyone tell me what duties these 2-4-2Ts had in Hull? As far as I know there were only 2 allocated to Dairycoates (7175 and 7184 - later becoming 7171 and 7175 and finally 67171 and 67175).

Reallocated to Hull (Dairycoates) during 1946 to replace withdrawn Worsdell F8s. Used primarily for shunting, but 7175 noted pulling Inspection Saloon in April 1946. All withdrawn in August 1951.

There were 3 - 7175 (renumbered 7171), 7184 (7175) and 7578 (7155) - the duplication by renumbering of '7175' explains the third...

Thanks very much for the info. I did wonder about them on inspection saloon duty - good to have it confirmed. One hopes that 7175 was renumbered first or there would have been 2 F4s with the same number.

Hi Stu,

Do you have any photos of the F4's ? Did they carry 'British Railways' on the tank sides at any point ? I only ask as I model the Hull area around 1950 and an F4 would be great to model,

Wish I could help - I've got most books about Hull and East Yorks railways and have drawn a blank. I'm planning to model West Parade Jct/Argyle St in MSTS in late 49 - a real mix of LNER, British Railways and early BR logo. An F4 will be on the inspection saloon duty

7171 (ex-7175) was renumbered 67171 by 27/4/49 during a general repair at Stratford and scrapped 1/8/51;
7175 (ex-7184) was renumbered 67175 also by 27/4/49 during a general repair at Stratford and similarly scrapped 1/8/51;
7155 (ex-7578) was only at Hull briefly, being transferred to Malton on 29/9/46, renumbered 67155 by 15/4/50 during a general repair at Stratford and scrapped 14/8/51.

Above information from Yeadon Volume 39.

As all three were sent down to Stratford for the repairs it would seem reasonable to assume that these three were out-shopped in the same livery as applied to others of the class at around the same time, although not specifically listed as such in Yeadon. Accordingly, 67171 and 67175 probably received unlined black with ‘BRITISH RAILWAYS’ on the tanks and the number on the bunker sides, but with the correct form of Gill Sans 6. See Yeadon p100 lower.

From August 1949 the words were replaced by the Lion and Wheel emblem facing forwards, but still unlined black (only the Autotrain-fitted members of the class were lined out), so 67155 probably received this. See Yeadon p101 lower.

If any photographs do turn up, confirmation or correction of the above would be useful.

Thanks very much for taking the time to post this information, very useful indeed. Like you Stu I have most books on the Hull area and model around the same period and it does seem that the Hull F4's were extremely camera shy, either that or the authors saw fit not to add them. I would like to model one of these at some point as they are unusal to the area and I like the unusal. One on an inspection saloon, that would look lovely, i'll ponder this further,

And the F4 hauling it was probably (6)7175, as this was the only one of the Hull trio fitted with steam heating apparatus.
