V2 locos pre Nationalisation

Post by Graeme Leary »

I am a tad (very)confused about positioning and type of name 'plates' on V2 locos. Photos of Green Arrow I have seen shows a 'straight' nameplate fixed to the side of the smokebox but I have also seen a model with a curved nameplate (in this case 'The Coldstreamer) placed 1/2 way along the lower side of the boiler just above the 'sidewalk' - no doubt there is a proper name for this. I also have nameplates for 'The Snapper, East Yorkshire Regiment etc etc' and these are shaped in the same curved way suggesting they should be fixed in the same place as 'The Coldstreamer' referred to. These curved plates were supplied by Fox Transfers as I'm repainting and renaming a V2 model and I trust someone could clarify this point for me. Also what livery would 'The Snapper' have been pre Nationailsation?

4771 when new had the nameplate on a false splasher on the running board but it was very quickly replaced by the straight nameplate on the smokebox. All other named V2s had the nameplates on the running board mounted on a false splasher. One, the Durham Light Infantry was not named until 29/4/58 (60964).

The Snapper.
You can use Coldstreamer in LNER Doncaster green livery as your donor locomotive for pre-war modelling. It has the monobloc cylinder casting, hence lower profile steam pipes. Being a Darlington built loco. the cylinder casings would be painted green. (Doncaster painted theirs black)
She was named at Hull Paragon station on 11th September 1937 in a ceremony performed by Brigadier-General J.L.J. Clark of the East Yorkshire Regiment, and carried the curved name plates with straight star and regiment logo on the centre driving wheel splashers. For the naming ceremony she also had the same style of plate on the smoke box. There is photographic evidence of the 5pm departure from Hull after naming, with this nameplate in place. This will have been removed for normal service.
Wartime unlined black livery was applied as the locomotives went through the works during WWII.
After the war, lined black livery with LNER logo, then British Railways logo, and then the appropriate lion symbol for the period was applied.
The Snapper received separate cylinder castings in January 1962 and would require the large profile steam pipes if you were modelling later than this date.
Hope this helps.
