Magnesite and Sulphate traffic - Teesside

Post by Sylvian Tennant »

Hello there

I would like some information on the magnesite trains that when to Steetley near Hartlepool during the 50/60's.
Mainly what wagons did they use (which one can I use in model form) and any photographic evidence of them if possible.

I am also curious as to any photographic evidence of the Haverton Hill Sulphate trains that used the 50t open wagons. Alternatively I would like to know the sheeting arrangement for these wagons, i.e the colour of the tarpaulin and were all wagons sheeted over?

Kind regards

It might be worth looking on the Industrial railway sites for photos as the Steetley Mfg Co. Ltd. operated from 1937 at their Palliser works near Hartlepool employing two steam and later three diesel locos. There are bound to be photos of these in action at the works handling wagons from the LNER and later BR.

In the 70s & 80s Steetly used air braked covered hoppers from Ferryhill - two different types for two different products. So perhaps in the 50s they used Covhops - probably unbraked.

Yes, I can remember Steetley flows appearing on LM marketing stats in the early 70's and I'm pretty sure they were in Covhops. Seemed very 'modern' trains at the time. Can't remember where they went to but Llynclys rings a distant bell - but could be very wrong! Ah those stacks of continuous printout sheets in block capitals with none of the letters properly aligned.

Try this link - a kit of a 50ton wagon is shown here.

Cheers guys that is a big help, incidentally I've found a pic of a Q6 passing west Hartlepool shed with some covered 21t hopper. I highly suspect that this may have been one if these fabled trains.
