Darlington MPD and the missing J94s

Post by Beamish »

I was one of those unfortunate individuals who always turned up somewhere a day ( or weeks) too late. And so, it was no surprise to me that on Monday 9th August 1965 when I travelled to 51A I was not only told to sling my hook by the shed staff, but also the string of J94s that I'd been told were on the scrap line awaiting disposal were not there - and I'd missed not just a couple of J94s but apparantly six at least! The shed that day was a quiet affair: star of the show was Kenilworth, minus nameplates, but fizzling away on standby. I could glimpse a rusty old J27 with snowplough ( 65859) and a few Ivatts but little else. Where were the J94s? Had they already been dragged off to Cohens? Well, just recently I saw an interesting pic on the internet. It shows 68037, attached to an A1 and possibly about to make its final journey to Middlesborough and oblivion. The pic is dated Saturday August 14th 1965, so where had that J94 been and why hadn't I seen it days earlier? Was it lurking around the back of the shed? So, if anyone out there can remember these 0-6-0s, parked up beside the DMUs, opposite the cooling towers, do you know when they actually left the shed? Did they all go together or were they removed piecemeal?
