HUMOURIST A3 IN OO

I AM INTERESTED IN CREATING A3 HUMOURIST IN OO AS AT CIRCA 1938 - WITH KYLCHAP AND SMALL SMOKE DEFLECTORS.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY INFO ON THESE UNUSUAL DEFLECTORS ?

I AM AWARE SOME OF YOU WILL THINK THIS CRAZY BUT MY ERA IS JUST PRE-WAR 2

iT IS MY BELIEVE THAT THESE WERE THE SAME AS FITTED TO 60048, 60055, 60061 & 60112 IN THE LATE 1950's.

I don't know whether Ralph Jackson is still in the bits business as his nameplates etc. passed to Jim Grindlay. You can make a set of these deflectors yourself out of brass shim or even Plastikard.

I've done quite a few A1/A3 customisations myself but as yet have not tackled Humorist. See my other posts in the model railway section of this forum for more information.

I can email you a drawing of Humorist with small deflectors if you need it - send me a PM. Note that she had a diagram 94HP boiler at the time with round dome and a plain chimney.

Ralph Jackson is still in the bits business as I have purchased bits from him quite recently.

Further study shows that the deflectors fitted to Humorist pre-war were not the same as those used post-war. The pre-war ones had a fold where they were attached to the smokebox, whereas I presume that the post-war ones were simply tack welded onto the smokebox. The post-war ones were also at a sharper angle.

There is also the state of 2751 with sloping smokebox, stovepipe chimney, and still (almost) the same small deflectors.

I think these are the smoke deflectors you're after.
Humorist was used for many of the experiments in 32-34 and then again pre-war (38) and post war (47).

The photos are of a model John was working on in 2007. As you can see he didn't quite finish it but it is an excellent model and runs perfectly.
Of the many he completed I think this was his finest.

If you need further info the 1938 smoke lifters are included on Isinglass drawing 332 and the other variants on drawing 331.

If modelling an unusual loco, or modelling by unusual methods, classifies you as crazy, then I must be absolutely barking (no need for others to confirm, thanks). Late thirties seems like a good era to model if you ask me, and these days (until a certain generation moves on I suppose) late 30s models are a very welcome relief from the repetitive products of former 50s/early60s train spotters.

Hi,
Hornby did produce a model of Humourist with double Kalchipe. It did not have the small smoke deflecters you are asking about.

I also model LNER pre World War 2. I think it is the best period to model.

They look like they would be very simple to make and to apply to a Hornby A3 model. Even I could do it and I'm crap!

Not strictly in keeping with the OP, but this is my take on Humorist in '56 when she was a not infrequent visitor to my beloved Waverley Route!
