I am trying to identify the tenders used for various GNR locos (LNER D2, J6, J1 etc).
If I have understood what I am looking at, I cannot use the wheelbase as an identifier (earlier = 6'6" + 6'6"; later 6'10" + 6'2"). The definitive diagnostic would be the shape of the coal hopper (horse shoe vs self-trimming).
The only thing I can see helping here is the location of the water-filler overflow vents (small conical mushrooms) on those tenders that have scoops fitted. The horseshoe tenders have these set further to the rear, than the self trimmers, correct?
Any help on:
(1) How to distinguish these tenders
(2) The chronology of GNR tender orders
(3) relating A and B to the above.
(4) Sources (almost certainly within GNRS and currently unpublished)?

Re: Ivatt GNR tender identification
I know you want to know now, but if you can show a little patience, I understand a leading light is currently reviewing the draft of his book on the subject of GNR tenders. I believe it is intended/hoped that the GNRS will publish it.
Short of that, I can recommend the short pieces in the various volumes of RCTS GNR locomotive history books, or perusal of Isinglass drawings.
Cheers,
Vernon

That'd be Malcolm (probably author, if not then as reviewer), right?
Anyway, thanks. Probably time to renew membership, I guess.
Dave.

Re: Ivatt GNR tender identification
i have mentioned some of this elsewhere, but it is worth checking the various Yeadon volumes to get a better idea of photographic identification.
are you trying to ensure that you use the correct tender on a model?
