60020 - Dominion of Pakistan?

Post by Muzza »

I have found an old photocopy from an Ian Allen ABC showing the names & numbers of all the A4's that made it into British Railways service.

60020 is Listed as "Dominion of Pakistan" not "Guillemot" as is more commonly known.

Was the loco ever named "Dominion of Pakistan" or was it only proposed and never carried out. Pakistan was a dominion from 1947 - 1956. Was the name changed and then changed back?

Or was it all in the imagination of the publishers?

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Murray

From Yeadons;
On to it's wartime black; Gateshead changed 4465 to 20 on Sunday 15th September 1946, and then, only nine days later the engine entered Doncaster works for general repair. This included the provision of cut-outs for LNER and 20, as seen here at Haymarket (picture).
It was ex works with the same style, and name from it's next general on 10th October 1947, having just escaped another political muddle, because it had been considered for changing to DOMINION OF PAKISTAN. The engine became 60020 from October 1948.

Thanks Mark,

Did Ian Allen jump the gun? Obviously they thought the change was going ahead.

Depends when Ian wrote his book, as Yeadon wrote all his afterwards, after rescuing all the documents from the sheds, of the full histories, except A1/10/3 2567, 2748 & 2749 where the first cards got lost in the reorganising in the early BR preiod!

Aso on the subject, I'm going through Yeadons noting down depots and dates, for each shed (long Job, as I ain't finished Kings Cross yet!)
For 4498 it says;
It was probably intended to name 4498 Bittern, a title already proferred to 4492 but not used.
As it was it came 4 engines on on the preserved 4464!

and 4496 was supposed to be Sparrow Hawk, which ended up on 4463

Only just got my issue of Steam Railway with the feature on the A4s (it takes a while to get out here).

It also mentions the proposed renaming of 60020.

Thanks for your replys.

Yes, my 1948 Combined Volume shows 60020 named Dominion of Pakistan. (And Pakistan was in fact a Dominion until 1956 - something I didn't know until I checked.)

This was produced sometime in the second half of 1948, I think. I suspect it was never renamed for political reasons. Actually I'm surprised 'Empire' didn't lose it s name after 1948, when there was no 'Empire of India' left!

Also in Steam Railway, and I've mentioned this before, but in August 1944, LNER Director Fitzherbert Wright, persuaded Doncaster to borrow ex-works black A4 Merlin, and change it's identity three times to honour the birth years of his three children for photographs.
