q5 numbers in Br

Post by alberta »

Hi everyone i'm just trying to find a little information on the last of the q5's that made it into br. I know the last went in 1951 & i am trying to find information & possibly photos showing then in there last days. I know that a few of the locos that went so early didn't get br emblems so i am curious to find out more about this class of loco. I'd also like to know where there final sheds were before withdrawal. The reason for my research is mainly for modeling purposes as i am about to make a purchase of a kit for one & want to see if i can model it in br livery so any help will be greatly received.

Regards,

The infomation you require is in the RCTS 'Locomotives of the LNER part 6C' and 'Yeadon's Register' Volume 23.
The RCTS volume states nine were renumbered into the 60000 series. Only one of the reboilered Q5/2s was renumbered, 63322. It only lasted just over three months with this number before being wdn in 2/1949.
Yeadon's later work suggests only 8, with 3 getting a smokebox door numberplate, 63290, 63328 and 63333. There is a photo of 63333 at Middlesbrough shed with numberplate. None received a BR crest, although a few did have 'British Railways' on the tender including 63319.

Considering 77 locomotives were taken over by BR in 1948 not many lasted long enough to display nationalised ownership.

Middlesbrough, Borough Gardens, Selby, Darlington, Newport for the sheds, but Yeadon is the place to look for individual locos.

One of the main reasons for the slaughter of the Q5 class was the enormous influx into the NE area of the WD 2-8-0 class. These were more powerful and considerably cheaper to maintain against the then fifty year old Q5s. It was such a shame that none of them was preserved. :(
