The diagram states that carriages built for the GE Section had 8' 0" wheelbase bogies, and that the van load was correspondingly uprated from 2.5 to 3 tons. It seems that this actually applied only to those carriages constructed at York in 1927, rather than as a general rule.
Can one of our resident experts please confirm the actual type of bogie fitted? It will be one of Gresley type Light, or Heavy (as per the Quins), ex-GN Fox, or ex-GE, but I cannot presently find confirmation elsewhere.
TIA

My guess is that these were the 8' wb single bolster heavy bogies that were fitted to some of the quad sets. You would need photographic evidence to confirm this. Of course there is no guarantee that these coaches retained the same bogies for all of their lives.65447 wrote:The diagram states that carriages built for the GE Section had 8' 0" wheelbase bogies, and that the van load was correspondingly uprated from 2.5 to 3 tons. Re: Diagram 65 4 Compt Brake 3rds - Bogies for GE Section
Thanks very much Bill, I thought that I was going to have to 'bump' my post back onto page 1.
I'm aware and have seen photos of the ex-GE bogies specifically fitted to the 'Ilford' stock, and also aware of course of the change from the 8' 6" to the 8' 0" wheelbase 'heavies' for the later builds of the GE Quins, which was also 1937. There is a certain degree of synchronicity in that but it could also be, for some reason, that the ability to carry an extra half-ton was relevant.
It would be very hard to distinguish the difference in wheelbase in a photo, but the double row of rivets could provide a useful clue...

The 8's bogies had single bolsters and so the bolster support bar was shorter, a different shape and did not have the two spring supports visible on the 8'6" bogie. See the bottom of thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3210 for photos of the light type and the current 'Mailcoach Kits' thread for a photo of the 8' heavy type.65447 wrote:It would be very hard to distinguish the difference in wheelbase in a photo, but the double row of rivets could provide a useful clue...

LNER Standard Gresley Carriages by Michael Harris gives the following numbers for the GE Section Dia 65s built at York in 1927 as 62571- 90, with an added comment "Detail differences from the rest on this diagram" What the latter are I do not know - perhaps the smaller bogie wheelbase?. Two more Dia 65s ( Nos 62608/9)were built at York in 1928 for the GE Section without the aforementioned added comment.

Yes, those are the very ones the subject of my query, and if you look carefully at the accompanying diagram you will see the explanation (bottom rh corner)...scottiedog wrote:LNER Standard Gresley Carriages by Michael Harris gives the following numbers for the GE Section Dia 65s built at York in 1927 as 62571- 90, with an added comment "Detail differences from the rest on this diagram" What the latter are I do not know - perhaps the smaller bogie wheelbase?.
