Engineer locomotive drawings and replica/new builds

Post by notrom »

Does anyone know if there is a centtralised list of surviving drawings from which replica/new build locomotives could be built? I ask because much of the discussion/thoughts on possible replicas seems to concentrate on relatively recent (ie 1930s-40s) locomotives, of which, naturally, we have a predominace already.

I would love to see more from the Edwardian/early 1920s and even late Victorian eras where there are huge gaps in the list of survivors. A Raven pacific would be a wonderous thing to behold as would some of his atlantics. Or how about a GER B12 4-6-0 in its original Holden state with its beautiful blue livery? Too many others to mention save one...

An LNWR Claughton. There, I've said it! No doubt a moderator will delete my foul language.

I do appreciate that there are other considerations beyond the availability of working drawings such as the ability to generate revenue from hauling large trains over long distances but I can still dream.

From an LNER point of view, I think most of the original Doncaster and Darligton sets of drawings now reside at the NRM. Certainly they went there and I know that a number of members of the LNER Study Group hve assited in sorting and cataloguing them. Not sure how far back this goes but I would imagine to the trun of the century. There was rumour of Edward Thompson having large numbers of old drawings destroyed, and equally drawings being burried in an old boiler to prevent just such a fate, but I suspect much of that was hype associated with the Gresley/Thompson drama.

Parhaps someone knows?

Going way off on a tangent, I have just read an article about another ER new build, but this time the loco is a diesel, namely a Baby Deltic.

Thanks, 2512silverfox, I'll see what happens if I email NRM.

The Doncaster drawing register is available online via A2A and that will give you a flavour of what has survived.

Sirs, It is nice to know that a G5 is to be replicated. I fired these engines when I was a coolie in the push/pull link in 1953. Nice steamer if you salt and peppered them and they rode as smooth as a bogie coach. Happy Daze. They would even steam against two injectors on a 1 in 40 gradient and that from a standing start from Ormesby station.
