Jinty's at York?

Post by Tom F »

Morning all

Did these little 3Fs ever cross the pennine's and be based at York, even for a short time?

I seem to remember seeing a picture of a Jinty at York but unsure, just wondered if they ever did station pilot duties there

Cheers

Jinties were indeed shedded at York but they were transfered from ex-LMS sheds which had come under the control of the LNER in the mid 50's so they were already on the 'right' side of the Pennines.York had 12 on it's books at various times beteen 1957 and 1962.The longest serving ones were 47421 and 47448 both of which arrived from Royston in Nov 1957 and were withdrawn from York in mid 1961.
The locos were also shared with other sheds in the York district i.e Starbeck, Selby and Scarboro.
Hull Dairycoates also had 4 over the 1960-61 period.

Many thanks 50C :)

Out of interest would these locos have had the Mixed traffic bording around the tanks? I have a Jinty I got with the Bachmann Suburban set, and would like to renumber her to one of the York ones

I don't mind having to remove the bording, but obviously easier if I don't have to ;)

Didnt Darlo repair a couple of Midland 3Fs and give them tank numbers in a similar way to J72s.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.

Hi 52D

I know that Darlington overhauled/repainted at least one Jinty, no 47482, in April 1964. It was, indeed, turned out with the number on the tankside under the crest.

A photo of this loco, taken at Crewe in March 1965, appears in Fowler Locomotives/Brian Haresnape/Ian Allan

The question remains, however, what exactly did Jinties DO at York

They were certainly used on station pilot duties. I have a picture (too poor to be worth reproducing) of one with a van and a carriage on the down through road between platforms 8 & 9, Silver Fox was the main subject of the shot.

There is another poor photo of one in Darlington works.

I would have thought local trip workings as well.
Rowntrees, Foss Islands branch, Carriage and wagon works are just some.

51L had a Jinty or two, not as nippy for shunting as a J72 you couldn't sling the reverser over. with a J72 reverser over and steam on helped you stop a train quicker when shunting-you used the steam brake as well ofcourse. J50s were cumbersome as well for reversing and quick shunting.
