I have been compiling a list of tenders used by the LNER in departmental service, mainly water and sludge carriers and the occasional oil carrier. The LNER introduced a departmental numbering system in I think the mid to late 1930s which was 6 figures long starting with the number 9.
There seem to be several series 900xxx-902xxx, 940xxx-943xxx, 950xxx-953xxx, 961xxx-963xxx
Does anyone know why there were different number series?

Re: LNER Departmental Rolling Stock Numbering
Was this not something Thompson did as he had responsibility for rolling stock. Of course in 1941 he renumbered everything.

Re: LNER Departmental Rolling Stock Numbering
The number series were allocated to and denoted stock owned by individual departments, e.g.:
900xxx NE Area (Civil) Engineer's Department
901xxx NE Area Locomotive Department
902xxx NE Area Workshops Department
903xxx NE Area Stores Department
The second digit equated to the older numerical Area/Section identification, such that 95 was GC, 96 GE, 97 SSA (NB).
Regrettably I only have partial lists to hand.
