Openshaw pilot

Can anyone expand on the work done by the "Openshaw Pilot"?
The Drewry Demonstrator 0-6-0 diesel shunter Works no 2217 later to be DS1173 in BR(SR) departmental stock, was used on the "Openshaw Pilot Gorton in 1947
