Peppercorn A1 liveries

Post by Coboman »

I remember reading some time ago that the NRM found evidence that 4 A1s, namely "North British", "Great Central", "Great Eastern" and "Great Northern" were to be painted in the colours of their railway namesakes but with British Railways on the tenders. Is anybody able to confirm this, or better still know when this was written in the Railway Magazine?
Thanks

the RM article (a letter from a Matthew Cousins of the Brighton Atlantic Project) appears in the April 2009 issue p.29
It shows 4 x A1s in varying liveries thus;
60147 Saxony Green
60156 Brunswick & Claret
60157 Deep Ultramarine
60161 Bronze Green/Brown
all have the early BR lion & wheel crest on the tender

I confess I havent seen any subsequent disclaimer or correspondence since.
Would've been a nice idea though

That does sound a nice idea.

"RM" - was the article in Railway Magazine or Railway Modeller please?

Were the pictures in colour?

It was Railway Magazine, coloured drawings as I remember. The 'correction' was printed in one of the next couple of issue - in what form (letter, correction type box etc.,) is beyond my memory

I plan to, but I'll be doing them and A1/1 Great Northern as the LNER's "heritage fleet" in a similar vein to Norfolk Southern's Heritage fleet: current locomotives painted in constituent liveries.

though NS doesn't just have 5, they have a grand total of 20

I wonder, had the big four continued would they have painted a selection of locomotives in constituent liveries. picture a series of A1s, both the ones that actually existed and new ones, painted in the liveries of companies long gone: Hull & Bansley, Great North of Scotland, Axholme Joint, Cheshire Lines Committee, Midland & Great Northern, East London, Great Western & Great Central, Manchester South Junction & Altrincham, Colne Valley & Halstead, East & West Yorkshire, Mid-Suffolk, North Sunderland.
a total of 17 possible locomotives all painted in constant liveries.

this may very well have been a possibility, had the big four continued I'm sure they would have done something to commemorate the 30th anniversary in 1953. or possibly with diesel or electric traction in 1973. At the very least the LNER, ever embracing of its heritage, would have done SOMETHING along the lines of what I have outlined.

I'm also partial to the idea of the LMS painting black fives and Riddles Standard fives (my theory would be Riddles would study the practices of the other three railways designers in order to apply them to his own standard designs) in pre-grouping liveries, and I'm partial to the prospect of a Five in LNWR lined black or Caledonian blue and red

In order to keep costs down I'll be using railroad models as they won't be active locomotives on the layout, and will spend the majority of the time on display.
