West Riding Artic twins

Good morning all

Were the LNER built 103'4 (twin 51'1) suburban artic twins used outside of the London area?

I'm sure I've seen a pic of a N1 heading a train including an artic twin, but can't find the pic. However, the pic may not have been from the West Riding.

Not all Gresley teak-panelled twins were to the standard length of 51' 1.5", some were 55' 6.75" including those to Dia. 210 built for Notts and Lincs services, which may have found their way into the West Riding. Gresley steel-panelled twins to Dia. 310 were built for Notts and West Riding services.

Post-war, twins could be found far from their original intended areas and workings; several ended up in East Anglia so nothing is impossible.

Not a precise answer but perhaps of some use to you.

I have a copy of Great Northern Railway in West Yorkshire by Martin Bairstow that shows the following articulated stock.

Page 13 - C12 7353 at Beeston with a three coach train, two of which are articulated. They look like Gresley steel panelled stock.

Page 40 - N1 at Batley with a five coach close-coupled articulated set (quint-art?). They look like conversions from Howlden stock.

Page 61 - N1? 69467 with two articulated coaches. They look like Gresley steel panelled stock.

JASd17 of this parish has published some research on artic stock in the West Riding in the LNER Society Journal.

There were no LNER built twins in the West Riding Sets until those produced in the early years of the war to Diagram 310. These were produced in both steel and wooden panelled versions. They ran with Brake Thirds to Diagram 319, forming 3 carriage sets.

Twins made up from Howlden stock were used throughout the LNER period usually running in pairs, giving the same accommodation as the 218H Quad sets.

G'day all

Thanks John et al, for the info. I was wondering about the use of Gresley Suburban twins, and had an idea they were used in the West Riding.

Looking at the Isinglass catalogue, it seems there were many varieties of ex-6 wheel and ex-8 wheel stock running as artics in the West Riding.

for your information, the old Model Railway Constructor July / August 1982 carried an article on GNR twin articulated suburban coaches inc. a brief history and nos. of units. The article is credited to Fred Lee.

July covered the third class brake with a layout plan and two pictures.
August covered the third class and composite with plans only.
