Ladies only compartments
Good morning all
In my childhood, I can remember "Ladies Only" compartments on Southern Region. They were at the end of a non-corridor coach and marked by a green sticker in the window.
Did the LNER have the same?

Re: Ladies only compartments
Can't say about LNER times, but I'm fairly sure I recall these in the Kings Cross suburban area BR loco-hauled compartment stock (known locally amongst staff as 'block enders'), around the mid-1960s.
Were the green stickers triangular with white lettering?

I can remember these on ECML trains at Newcastle in the 1960s. I imagine they were reserved on request to the guard or in advance.

Re: Ladies only compartments
They definately had them on the quad-art sets from KX. I have seen a reference from the mid 1930s stating that the ladies only compartment was to be moved from the middle of a coach in a set to the one next to the guards compartment.
Also the Diagram 23 third class coach with the hairdressing saloon had a ladies only compartment.

Does anyone know what colours the LNER 'Ladies Only' notices were? I asked the LNERCA some years ago and they didn't seem to know.

G'day all
I found a reference to Ladies only notices being green on the old GNR in 1960's.
The thread is entitled:
The end of the old GN suburban as we knew it 1976
I'm not clever enough to put a link to it.

Re: Ladies only compartments
I can remember seeing one (only once) at Newcastle on a South Tyneside set in the early 60's. I regret I can't remember anything about it, other than it was there!

Re: Ladies only compartments
I can recollect these on the LM., and I too think they were like the non smoking stickers in shape, but green. They disappeared in the mid-70's when complaints were made that the Sex Discrimination Act seem to apply only when men had an advantage of women.
Tangentially, the reason that men's lavatories were called 'Gentlemen' and accessible direct from the [platform, but the facility for women was through another room - the 'Ladies Waiting Room' was because, in Victorian times and later, there was a wish to conceal the fact that, apparently shockingly, the fragrant gender did perform bodily functions.

Re: Ladies only compartments
I believe that there were still a few compartments in those 'block ender' sets to been seen in the very early 1970s which still had "Ladies Only" on several compartment windows i vaguely recall.StevieG wrote:Can't say about LNER times, but I'm fairly sure I recall these in the Kings Cross suburban area BR loco-hauled compartment stock (known locally amongst staff as 'block enders'), around the mid-1960s.
