At risk of stating the obvious, I would say we had a scumbag spammer in our midst.

I've deleted them.
They were using proxies (probably other people's PCs infected with virus bots) so I can't ban a sequence of IP addresses.
I'm probably going to have to change the signup captcha.

Also please don't reply to the spam threads - it just makes the cleanup more difficult as I then have to delete your posts as well!
(this time I batch deleted everyone who joined in the last day - luckily there weren't any legitimate signups)

My better half, a black country wench and no mistake, has a better idea.
Tie them to a tree, scrape the skin off their backs - then rub in salt!
Seems reasonable to me!

It was obviously a concerted effort, because when I looked in at around 1030 UK time, the spamming had been going on for about 6 hours.
I really dont know what they are trying to achieve.

They are trying to manipulate search engine results. Lots of incoming links are considered a measure of popularity and quality.
