NER Diagram 196 Horse box roof detail

Post by AJ427 »

For my latest 3d printing foray it's back to an LNER subject and I'm attempting a NER Diagram 196 Horse box in 00. Work so far is based on the Peter Tatlow drawing as well as several reference photos. All of my BR-era photos are low shots and don't show clearly the roof details other than that they seem to differ from the drawing especially relating to the gas lamp. Can anyone shed any light on this? Also I assume these would have been repainted carmine at some point in the early BR-era?
Attached are renders of the work so far (ignore the gaudy part colours). For ease of painting/glazing/weighting, the model will come in three parts; chassis, body and roof with some optional details parts (buffers, brakes and roof vents) sprued up inside the body.

There are a number of shots of these in David Larkin's latest NPCCS book. I can't recall exactly the angles - there certainly aren't any top down ones - but they may help. There are certainly some in there in crimson.

Have you been in touch with the North Eastern Railway Association, in this respect? I seem to recall that there was/were an article/s on these horseboxes in their magazine "The North Eastern Express (?)" I think that the article was by Ian Sadler and was accompanied by one of his detailed drawings. I can't remember when the article was published, but it was probably 10/15+ years ago.
