Booster on a US Frisco 4-8-4

Post by richard »

Finally got back down to the "Museum of the American Railroad" (nee "Age of Steam") in Dallas (and hoping to move to Frisco in the near future), and took some photographs of their booster-equipped loco. This might be interested in those who have followed the LNER's own booster experiments.

I mis-remembered the loco type - for some reason I thought it was a Mikado. It is actually a 4-8-4 from the 'Frisco' (St Louis and San Francisco Railroad). This would tally with the LNER's own experience that the extra space in a 4 wheel truck suited the system better than a pony truck.

Note the instruction board in the cab. This suggests the booster was a relatively unusual fitting, but required special lubrication.

Photograph looking in to the rear bogie on the 4-8-4, showing the booster. The large pipe appears to be a steam pipe, and runs down the side of the loco. I didn't have a chance to see where it ended up with (I was in a group).

Booster instructions in the cab. Note the lubrication & idling instructions, and the restricted speed range.

Interestingly the instructions are almost the same as those given to LNER crews about the operation of the booster.
Hi interested in the area served by 52D. also researching colliery wagonways from same area.
