Resin Tender tops

This has been discussed a far bit recently, and some members are aware what I have been upto, and as I havent had much luck getting tops myself recently, I took some resin casting lessons from our resident expert Graeme, and hey presto, here we are




now this is the first variant I intend to produce, now those more informed of you will have to tell me what it is, to me its a slim n/c tender. It will fit on the correct chassis available from the usual sources with a dab of glue, and will come finished in grey primer. Some finer detailing will need to be added (not included) i.e. hand rails

To follow will be corridor variants, after discussing ideas with Graeme on Saturday, 3 styles should be reproducable, a curved back corridor, (Blackout informs me thats a '35) then I will do a flat back corridor (no beading) then finally a flat back corridor with beading

The first variant is avalible, please PM if interested, prices are £20 plus £3.50p&p, if more than one required, discounts will be offered

I am not going to try turn this into a business, just cover my costs and put a few pennies into the modeling pot so I can feed my habbit of other projects

Excellent Brian. I didn't think you were likely to be ready so soon when I saw your examples of the castings a few days ago, hence my renewed thoughts of a resin copy of my more basic tender top as a (probably cheap) stop-gap. These look as if they may be closer to the ideal answer for those who want more details and dimesional accuracy providing you can get / stay on top of any problems with air-locks in the moulds and surface defects on the castings. Unless people want a cheaper, plainer tender top (and they can let me know if that's the case) I see no point at present in pushing on with any ideas that I might have been contemplating - I have plenty of other things to do in any case.

No plans to do the Bachmann variants, these will keep me busy for now. The only one ready at the moment is pictured above

This is a useful service. Hopefully you'll be able to avoid the problems experienced by Mailcoach years ago when they tried to produce resin casts for 4200 Group standard tenders - the resultant products were quite brittle.

Now then, who's going to dare to try producing an entire loco body, given that Hornby no longer offer them as spares?

One way forward may be to treat a resin loco body is like an airfix kit, as this may solve the problem of air bubbles,any thoughts any one.

I forgot to add my own superlatives - that's going to be a really useful tender top. I will certainly put in an order once you're open for business, so to speak. Will make my life a lot easier in terms of modelling certain A3s.

Work has begun on the next phase of this project (phase 2/1), first rubber now setting

So soon ready I hope will be a curved back corridor. Will let you know when the first resin is cast along with any pics if all goes well

Phase 2/2 will be a flat back corridor, phase 2/3 flat back corridor with beading

Quick update

Phase 2/1 is going well, mould is made and I have poured first cast. Now I have gone in a slightly different direction with this mould in an attempt to speed up casting time, taking a gamble so to speak, and having removed the casting from the mould today it appears to have paid off. Again the resin is playing up, taking forever to harden but I can procede to the next step next week as I have ordered a new resin type to trail with, if that is okay I will be open for any orders for this variant as well as the slim n/c
